April--No Fooling!
April is National Poetry Month and nearly my favorite time for reading to the children. The series Poetry for Young People from Sterling Publishing is featured prominently in the display areas around the IMC. This month is such a wonderful opportunity for the family to read and share poetry, including memorizing poems as a mental exercise. Committing a poem to memory also promotes fluency and confidence in young readers. In our family, around the campfire on a summer's evening, or at a holiday gathering, someone will ask for a poem from one of the older members and it bounces from family member to member as even the youngest are proud to recite a nursery rhyme or poem to the praise of all. Start a new tradition, or carry on an older one during the Month Of Poetry. Happy Reading and Rhyming!
